General Motors Food Distribution

Harvesters works to provide food to anyone who needs it in our community. So, when more than 2,000 autoworkers at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas found themselves out of work, Harvesters responded. The employees were laid off when parts they needed became unavailable due to strikes at other GM plants around the country.

Harvesters worked with members of the UAW Local 31 to distribute fresh produce boxes, bread and dairy items to more than 167 autoworkers who need a little help to get by and provide food for their families during this time of uncertainty.

The fresh produce boxes included potatoes, onions, squash, peppers and cabbage all grown from farmers in Kansas. Harvesters receives thousands of pounds of fresh produce every week from several different farms that participate in the federal nutrition program, Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA). The program provides funding for local and underserved farmers to produce fresh, healthy food for food banks.
