Taking a “Day On” in Honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. stood courageously in the gap for many marginalized and oppressed groups: the black, the poor, those who were the product of generational disenfranchisement. To the very end, he sacrificed his own comfort and security for those who had no voice of their own. We believe that access to nutritious food is a basic human right, and so do our volunteers. And we were blown away that so many of them braved a frigid January 13 and January 15 to pay tribute to Dr. King on our special Days of Service.
In both Topeka and Kansas City, 364 volunteers gave their time to pack and sort food that will go to our agency partners, and ultimately, to neighbors in our communities facing food insecurity. Hands young, old, and in between packaged canned goods, potatoes, cereal and other foods while enjoying the camaraderie of other individuals and volunteer groups. It was amazing to see such a diverse group come together for a common cause.
Thanks to Fellowship Bible Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, Top City Step Team, the Highland Park High School basketball team, Garmin, Oracle Health, the UMKC softball team, City Wide Solutions, Hyman Brand Hebrew School, Longview Farm Elementary School PTA, Northland Families Learning Together, the Voy Spears Elementary School’s Kindness Club and all of the individuals and families who showed up and took a “day on” instead of a day off, and for helping us take a stand against hunger in tribute of Dr. King!
